How to đ Master the Transition from CFO to CEO?
Michael Trollope has recently published an article on the topic that I've summarized for you:
đ˘ A Strategic Leap Forward
The journey from CFO to CEO is becoming increasingly common and highly regarded According to Eton Bridge Partners Ltd's latest CEO Pathways report, only 20% of 1st time CEOs were previously CFOs, a figure that has been steadily rising This trend underscores the evolving role of CFOs, who are now seen as strategic partners to their CEOs, deeply involved in both day-to-day leadership and long-term strategic decision-making.
Margherita Della Valle isn't the only CFO, who's made the move to CEO successfully. In fact, a high proportion of Vodafone's CEOs were former CFOs One of the key reasons for this transition is the unique vantage point CFOs have within an organization.
As the financial stewards, they possess a comprehensive understanding of the companyâs operations, financial health, and strategic goals.
Recent high-profile transitions, such as bpâs Murray Auchincloss CFO stepping up to CEO in January 2024, highlight this trend. Other high profile moves are Safra Catz from Oracle, Shou Zi Chew, CEO of TikTok, Indra Nooyi, Former-CEO of PepsiCo, James von Moltke at Deutsche Bank, James Gorman, Former-CEO of Morgan Stanley, among others.
These moves are not just about filling a key vacancy, but are strategic decisions aimed at leveraging the CFOâs deep organizational knowledge & leadership skills The report also reveals that over half of CEO appointments are made internally, emphasizing the importance of nurturing talent within the organization. This internal promotion strategy not only ensures continuity but also boosts morale & loyalty among employees
However, the transition from CFO to CEO is not without its challengesđĽ.
CFOs must adapt to a broader leadership role, moving beyond their financial expertise to encompass all aspects of the business. This requires a shift in mindset, from being a financial guardian to becoming a visionary leader who can inspire & drive the entire organization forward
To successfully navigate this transition, aspiring CFOs should focus on developing their leadership skills, building strong relationships with other executives, & gaining a deeper understanding of the business beyond finance.

And don't take my word for it, take it from a recent CEO client of mine: âThe transition coaching has really helped me to think through and understand context, leadership, and people, materially better. The coaching has helped me to further mature in my relationship management, decision making and people leadership. Our work has been tremendously useful and Iâm confident that it will continue to remain useful both for me and for my executive leadership team.â
