In today's VUCA world, the role of a CEO is more challenging & critical than ever before. The latest Global CEO Turnover Index from Russell Reynolds Associates reveals fascinating insights. As always, I've done the reading and summarizing on your behalf, so you can save your most precious โจ asset, namely your time ๐: ๐ Key Findings ๐ Stability Amidst Disruption: Despite the political and economic turbulence, CEO turnover has seen a notable decline. In Q2 2024, only 51 CEOs globally left their roles, marking the lowest number of Q2 departures since the index began in 2018 ๐ Planned Successions on the Rise: Planned CEO successions accounted for 23% of all outgoing CEOs in Q2 2024, more than double the six-year average of 11%. This shift underscores the growing importance of strategic succession planning ๐ฉ๐ง๐ปโโ๏ธ Gender Disparity: Women remain vastly underrepresented in CEO roles. Of the 51 CEOs appointed in Q2 2024, only five were women. At the current rate, achieving global gender parity in CEO positions could take 78 years. However, the percentage of women holding CEO positions globally has grown by 7.7% since Q1 2018 ๐ก Implications for Businesses โ Strategic Succession Planning: Organizations must prioritize long-term succession planning, not just for CEOs but across all leadership levels. This ensures a smooth transition and continuity in leadership. ๐ฉ๐ง๐ปโโ๏ธ Gender Diversity: To achieve true gender balance, companies need to invest more in developing their women leaders, expanding pipelines, and addressing biases in the succession planning process ๐ Looking Ahead: The data from the Global CEO Turnover Index highlights the critical need for organizations to adapt to the evolving leadership landscape by focusing on strategic succession planning and fostering gender diversity, and supporting incoming C-suite leaders through targeted interventions such as Transition Coaching that gets results. ๐๐ผ A recent client of mine, a Co-CEO of a beverage company who stepped into a family CEO succession that was table stakes for the business.
